Nearly three years ago Ballingarry Fine Gael Br. members took a decision to Sponsor the ‘Collins 22 Society’ as a national movement,
This decision was inspired by the dedication of the Beal na Blath commemoration committee led by Frank Metcalfe, their friends throughout Cork, especially Clonakilty and the many supporters of that AUGUST 22nd. gathering from around the country,.....we, like them, felt it is possible that the sacrifice of Michael Collins might be discarded to the dustbin of history.
We also decided to set up a web site dedicated to Michael Collins life, essentially to have an internet presence and as a source of information.
............To say it is a success is an understatement.
1) 25,000 hits for March of this year.
2) 22,000 Hits for Sept of this year.
Because of this unprecedented interest world-wide, it seems logical to set up a Branch of the Society in each County.
The purpose of a Branch
To gather at least once a year for a celebration of the legacy left to us by Michael Collins.
To share ideas, have Lectures, Films, debates etc.
To nominate from each Branch of the Society two people to a National Organisation
but above all remind Fine Gael of its commitment to upholding the legacy bequeathed to it by Michael Collins, through dismantling the reticence within the party to this fact.
Dick Mulcahy’s words to the Army at the time of Michael Collins’ death are relevant now – I quote
“Every dark hour that Michael Collins met since 1916 seemed but to steel that bright strength of his and temper his gay bravery. You are left, each, inheritors of that strength, and of that bravery. To each of you falls his unfinished work”.
